Go cashless: Don’t carry over Rs 50K during polls

With the announcement of the date for Delhi’s assembly election, scheduled for 4 December, the model code of conduct has been imposed in the city. 

On Friday, the Delhi Electoral Officer (DEO) advised people not to carry cash worth more than Rs 50,000 to avoid getting into trouble.

However, DEO said that the action will be intelligence-based and all the concerned agencies have been asked not to harass any common citizen.

‘We have asked the banks, income tax department and excise department to keep a tab on the money transactions. Any suspicious money transaction for election purpose will be actionable,’ said Vijay Dev, chief electoral officer, Delhi.

‘Election expenditure monitoring measures will also be enforced with flying squads and video surveillance teams There will be close liaison with banks to watch suspicious cash withdrawals,’ Dev said.

Dev added that voter identity slips will be issued three to four days before the polling.

Dev further said that instructions relating to issue of prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, deposit of licence arms, ban of sale of liquor, preventive measures for detention of people with criminal background is being issued to the Delhi police, excise commissioner, Delhi and concerned district magistrates and Deputy commissioner of police.

The Election Commission of India on Friday announced election dates for five states — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Delhi.

Elections to elect representatives to the 70-member Delhi assembly will be held on 4 December in a single phase. Date of notification has been set as 9 November, while the last date for filing of nominations is 18 November. The last date for withdrawal of candidates is 20 November.

The counting of votes will be held together for all five states on 8 December.

The Election Commission has introduced a new post of awareness observers for every constituency this time. 

The awareness observers will have all the data about voters and polling stations.
