GJM chief Gurung pledges support to BJP

There are speculations that the other two Lok Sabha seats which GJM is likely to support BJP are Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

In the Monday morning, GJM general secretaries Vinay Tamang and Raju Pradhan led by Gurung met BJP president Rajnath Singh at the party headquarters in the national capital and officially announced the tie up. ‘I would like to welcome GJM’s decision for supporting us,’ Singh said.

Gurung’s association with BJP is not new. In the last Lok Sabha polls, the GJM had supported BJP leader Jaswant Singh in Darjeeling, which he represented in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Soon after the announcement, Gurung said, ‘After the meeting with the BJP president we have decided to extend our full support to candidates fielded by BJP all over India and Darjeeling. I would like to appeal all the Gorkhas to support BJP all over India.’

The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the BJP is yet to decide the candidate from Darjeeling and finding it difficult to get a strong contender to contest against Trinamool Congress candidate Baichung Bhutia.

Notably, Jaswant  Singh, who is a sitting MP from Darjeeling, has already conveyed to the party high command that he would like to contest from his home state of Rajasthan. So far the BJP has announced list of 34 candidates out of 42 from West Bengal.
