The development came in the wake of a petition filed by lawyer-cum-activist Prashant Bhushan before the apex court on Thursday claiming that the report prepared by the I-T department contained detailed information about the financial leads between Sinha and Qureshi, unearthed while examining their communications through various channels.
‘I had requested the apex court to ask for a copy of the I-T report on the Sinha-Qureshi link and urged the honorable judge to examine it. I am happy that today the apex court has asked for the report for further examination,’ Bhushan, who is also a leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), said.
On 22 February, 2014, Millennium Post broke the news of Qureshi’s (a Kanpur-based meat exporter) dubious activities and his connections with powerful people in the political, bureaucratic and business fraternities, including former CBI chief A P Singh.
The controversy around Sinha came to the fore after it was found that Qureshi had ‘allegedly’ met him 90 times in last 15 months. The visitors’ diary at his 2 Janpath residence revealed that he met two top Reliance ADAG officials nearly 50 times in the last one year. According to the charges levelled, the visits coincided with Sinha’s alleged attempt to file an affidavit which sought to ‘defuse’ the charges against the company in the 2G scam.
Later, it was also revealed that he had also met some of the accused in the coal and other scams too. An NGO, Common Cause (legally represented by Bhushan), had moved the SC requesting it to issue direction to the Centre to apprise it about the progress made by the I-T department in its probe against Qureshi.
The petition had alleged Qureshi has strong connections with several coal scam accused and also with the present CBI director. Meanwhile, Sinha’s counsel took strong objection over the plea seeking the I-T report by Common Cause. However, attorney general Mukul Rohtagi said the Centre would put the I-T department appraisal report, on Qureshi before the court on 17 October.
Bhushan has repeatedly claimed that the said appraisal report of I-T department over coal scam, based on the telephonic conversation between the CBI director and an alleged hawala operator Moin Qureshi, contains many other shocking revelations.
