In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly threw acid on an 18-year-old girl after she allegedly rejected the marriage proposal of the woman’s brother in the Gandhi Nagar area of East Delhi on Thursday night, said police. However, senior police officers of the East District refused to divulge any details regarding the incident.
The girl, identified as Minakshi allegedly went to meet Anita, the main accused, and her brother Radhey at the Dharampura Chowk in Gandhi Nagar area. Following a heated argument between Anita and Minakshi, Anita flung acid on Minakshi’s face after which she along with her brother fled from the spot.
The incident was reported to the police at around 9.15 pm when Minakshi was found by the locals writhing in pain and someone made a PCR call after which she was rushed to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital.
Sources said that last year Minakshi had gone to Haridwar with her father during Kavar where she had met Radhey. Since then, they became friends. Natives of Nainital, Radhey along with Anita came to meet Minakshi often. Thursday night was one such visit which turned into a nightmare for Minakshi.
While there are reports that Radhey had proposed Minakshi for marriage and she had refused which led to the incident, Minakshi’s family alleged that they were not aware of any marriage proposal made by Radhey to Minakshi.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the accused woman and her brother. Sources said that police have detained the duo and are questioning them.
Admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Minakshi suffered 30 per cent burn injuries on her face, hands and neck. Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal visited the girl in the hospital.
She tweeted saying: “Girl burnt badly, eyes not opening. Met MS GTB, hv got girl shifted to private ward. DCW will ensure proper treatment to the girl n justice (sic).”
Minakshi works in a local factory and is the sole bread-earner of the family. Her father is bedridden and is suffering from tuberculosis.
