Ghaziabad mono rail on anvil

As part of its ambitious project to provide world class facilities to commuters and decongest traffic in the satellite city, the Ghaziabad Development Authority [GDA] is mulling introduction of first ever mono rail in the region. The rail will connect Vaishali Metro station to the proposed Ahmisa Khand station in Indirapuram. The proposal is likely to be announced after the election of local bodies in Uttar Pradesh.

The authority is likely to write to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation [DMRC] to submit a detailed project report regarding the mono rail, along with the extension of Metro line from the Electronic City station in Sector 62, Noida.

‘In the discussion with DMRC officials, it was proposed to connect Metro line from Electronic City to Vaishali station. But the officials were of the view that it would not be possible due to several multi-storey buildings on the way and Metro is possible only upto Ahmisa Khand in Indirapuram. So we have decided to connect these two terminals with mono rail,’ said a senior official of GDA.

According to sources, the track for mono rail would be constructed along with the extension of Metro line from Noida City to Electronic City to Ahmisa Khand and the entire project would be made operational in one go. In the proposal being finalised by GDA, the Metro line from Noida City Centre to Electronic City would be extended by 1.5 km in Indirapuram. A Metro station would be constructed at Ahmisa Khand. The proposed mono rail, around 3-4 km, will connect Ahmisa Khand to Vaishali station.

‘This will significantly reduce traffic pressure on roads as Metro will be available at a walking distance for residents of Vaishali and Indirapuram. The pressure of parking at Vaishali and Electronic City would also be eased,’ added the official. The route of Metro is more flexible and needs less space so it can be constructed in busy areas as well.

‘The extension of Metro line from Electronic City to Ahmisa Khand could be done along with the proposed Metro line of Noida City Centre to Electronic City. If the GDA finalises the budget, the entire project could be constructed in one go,’ said Sanjeev Saran, CEO of Noida.

A meeting of Noida and DMRC officials was held in Noida on Tuesday to finalise DPR of metro route from Noida City Centre to Electronic City and Botanical Garden in Noida to Kalindi Kunj.
