Pockets of Gurgaon continued to be hit by acute water shortage on Thursday after supply was disrupted by Jat protestors who damaged the Yamuna Water Canal, a major source of water for the Millennium city.
DLF Phase 1, 2, 3 and most sectors of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) are the areas worst-hit by the crisis. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has been sending water tankers to these areas.
On Tuesday, complaints regarding water shortage came in from DLF Phase I, II, and III, Sector 40, 30, 31, 28, Sector 15, Sector 14, Sector 22, 23, Sector 5, 7 Palam Vihar and most parts of Old Gurgaon. Meanwhile, residents of gated communities, who have their own borewells, were not affected by the crisis.
Meanwhile, the district officials have said that repair work on the damaged canal has begun and the water supply is expected to be normal by Friday.
While Gurgaon needs at least 70 million gallons per day (MGD) of water, only 25 MGD was supplied to the city on Tuesday and Wednesday, said HUDA sub-divisional engineer Subash Piplani.
As a result of the sudden increase in demand of water, private tankers have also increased the price and are charging Rs 900 to 1,000 for 2,000 litres of water, which used to cost Rs 600 to 700 a week ago.
