Generational shift evident at BJP’s Bengaluru meet

Sources said, Advani’s name is missing from the list of BJP leaders scheduled to deliver the closing remarks at the meeting. Since the founding of the party in 1980, it was first used to be former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpyee and later party veteran LK Advani who would conclude the meet, with their suggestions and guidance to the party workers.

The significant development came even after the NDA government conferred the Padma Vibhushan on Advani. Soon after Modi government came, he was made part of the BJP’s Margdarshak Mandal, which also includes Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee and veteran Murli Manohar Joshi.

After coming to power, this would be BJP’s largest strategy meet but so far party has not officially informed whether Advani will address the meet or not. He has attended and addressed all the national executive meetings of the party, except during the last meet in Goa when Modi was announced to be the head of party’s campaign committee for the Lok Sabha polls. Then he not only skipped the event but also sent a letter resigning from all posts of the party. It was learnt that he was not keen on addressing the meet in Bengaluru. However, he was convinced and agreed to attend.

Recently, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Advani and 19 others asking them why they should not be charged with conspiracy for the demolition of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. Many leaders are linking Advani’s name missing from speakers list to the apex court’s ruling.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru is gripped in to a festive mood with most parts of the city decked up with flowers depicting party symbol and its colour in the wake of two-day BJP National Executive meeting.

Among other issues on the agenda, the party’s focus would also be on expansion of its base in states where they have not fared well, especially in South India. Also, how to take up NDA’s achievement to masses would be another area where party leaders will be asked to concentrate.

The state BJP office has been decorated with illuminating lights and jubilant local people were seen eager to have a look at the Prime Minister. “We want to see what drove people to hear his speeches. We are happy that he has come to our city,” Dev Hirawat, a real estate developer said. The other issues likely to be taken up in the meeting are: Plans to celebrate next year the centenary of the Deendayal Upadhyaya and to put strict norms for those who will speak against the party line.

On hospitality, a strict all-vegetarian spread has been planned and Chefs from New Delhi, Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal have already reached the venues in preparing the food. “The menu was planned keeping in mind about all the delegates coming from all over India. There will be cuisines from North, South, East and West, but above all special focus was given to Gujarati food,” Party Spokesperson for Bengaluru unit R Krishna Deva Raya said. It is the fourth time that Karnataka is hosting the BJP national executive.
