Geared up: City gets disaster ready as Haryana releases 8 lakh cusecs

Delhi chief secretary D.M. Spolia on Monday called a high-level emergency meeting and reviewed the flood control preparations in the city as the threat of a possible flooding of Yamuna became imminent.
The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi would start rising from Tuesday evening as an unprecedented over eight lakh cusecs of flood water released from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district on Monday reaches the capital, officials said.
Spolia directed the revenue department to evacuate the families living near the Yamuna bank and instructed the officials to complete the evacuation Tuesday afternoon.
Relief tents and camps will come up by Monday night itself. Spolia asked all the agencies to get be prepared for any exigency.
Rajiv Kumar of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority said ‘Though there is no sign of flood, we have taken all flood control measures.’
Currently, Yamuna is flowing at a height of 202.34 metres near the old railway bridge in central Delhi where the danger mark is 204.83 metres.
