Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar on Friday called the Vasant Vihar gang rape as a ‘turning point’ in the history of the police force. ‘This particular case has given a new direction to criminal justice system of India,’ he said.
Addressing mediapersons for around two hours at the annual police briefing on Friday, Kumar shared the work done by Delhi police in 2012. He was happy with the night patrolling done by senior officials in their respective districts till mid-night to put a check on crime.
‘There will be zero tolerance for crime against women,’ he added. However, more than 60 rapes have been reported even after high alert following the 16 December gang rape of a 23-year-old paramedic student who later succumbed to her injuries in Singapore.
When asked about the title Rape Capital given to the capital, he said, ‘Delhi has witnessed 2.8 incidents of rape per lakh of population, however, Bhopal remained the highest with 5.3 rapes per lakh. Delhi is at 6th position among top 12 states.’
