Gang of extortionists which blackmailed doctors, busted

According to police, these racketeers, recently, had extorted Rs 40 lakh from one Path Lab owner in the area of West Delhi by making a sting video, apparently portraying him as a conduit for conducting sex determination tests.

On specific information, a team of South Eastern Range conducted a raid and apprehended two persons who were later identified as Ram Sharan (32) and Dhan Singh alias Deepak (30).

‘They were subjected to intensive interrogation and they revealed that both of them are working as freelancers for News channels and along with their associates they were running a blackmail and extortion racket since long and recently they had extorted Rs 40 lakh from the owner of the Path Lab in Punjabi Bagh. They further disclosed that they were aware that a case was registered against them in this regard, hence they were absconding. Subsequently to their interrogation and disclosure statements, their two other associates namely Jai Kochar (24) and Pushpa (36) were also arrested,’ Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.

Their interrogation has uncovered a very unique and disturbing modus operandi used by the gang. The gang used to target the well established doctors/owners of nursing homes and others. ‘Initially, a lady member of the gang would approach the doctor on the pretext of being pregnant and for conducting pre-natal sex determination test. If the victim used to refuse, then a dubious and clever strategy of asking leading questions would be adopted,’ said Mr Yadav. The gang members stationed outside would guide the lady through concealed communication devices and the matter would be recorded by the lady by spy cameras.

‘They would ask to get genetic/DNA tests if nothing incriminating was forthcoming and later they would fabricate the recordings by improving and altering the recorded conversation. They employed blackmailing strategies to extort money from the victims. The accused have disclosed that they used to give share of the extorted money to a manager and another person associated with some news channel, however, all this information is yet to be verified during investigation,’ he added.

Police have recovered Rs 70,500, one Swift car, and the electronic devices from them.
