With the Bharatiya Janata Party standing firmly behind its party president, Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday dismissed allegations levelled against him by Arvind Kejriwal. Gadkari said that the charges against him are baseless and he was ready for a probe as demanded by Kejriwal.
‘The allegations of land grabbing are absurd, land has been given on lease to a charitable trust which functions like a cooperative, it is not owned by me,’ said Gadkari. He added that the land in question was a wasteland valued at only Rs 20 lakh and it was given on lease to a charitable trust.
The BJP president also denied the allegation that all the water for the dams, which was meant for irrigation, is being diverted to his power plants. ‘Only 0.85 per cent of this dam water is being used for our power project and the rest goes to farmers for irrigation,’ said Gadkari.
The BJP leader on the other hand alleged that there is an understanding between the Congress party and IAC to divide the votes in a bid to occupy the opposition space. Gadkari also attacked Kejriwal and said that the activist had never visited the area and was not aware of the ground realities.
Later in the evening BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley attacked Arvind Kejriwal for his expose and said that the party is fully behind Nitin Gadkari. Taking a dig at the activist BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that Kejriwal is trying to hog the limelight and had converted his press conference into an election rally.
‘Arvind Kejriwal thinks he is a hitman and he can attack anybody but they scored an own goal today,’ said BJP leader of opposition Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley.
The BJP leaders said that hype had been created about what the expose will be, but Kejriwal despite trying hard could not find any thing.
Reiterating what Gadkari said, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said the land which has been given is used it to grow sugarcane saplings which are then provided to farmers at a subsidised rate.
‘The land was acquired in 1983-84 and the dam was built in 1997 and the farmers were paid total compensation during the process’ said Swaraj.
BJP while attacking India Against Corruption said that by exaggerating things they have damaged the credibility of civil society, he also added that IAC is trying to raise question marks over credibility of all political parties.
‘IAC has tried to bring in a moral equivalence among all political parties and put a question mark on all of them,on Wednesday’s press conference was a failed attempt to bring in a moral equivalence between BJP and Congress,’ said Jaitley.
The party also said that it was not the business of IAC to decide the functioning of a political party and IAC has raked up the issue only because Gadkari is about to get a second term as party president.
