The year witnessed high drama in University of Delhi (DU) campus over Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) but the new government in the Centre walked the talk by scrapping the controversial four year annual degree course. As the super active Vice-Chancellor of DU Dinesh Singh has gone into hibernation, the university is facing a real challenge to protect its autonomy and academic standards as new year is likely to face more ‘dictates’ from Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
“DU autonomy would be ruptured if suddenly University Grants Commission (UGC) would dictate us syllabus, teaching methods and such. FYUP was brought into system undemocratically. While bringing in any new programme or change in system, recommendations should be given by other authorities. It’s University’s decision to go by them or abort them. All the rules in the Ordinances which makes the process democratic needs to be followed,” said Abha Habib Dev, DU executive council member.
While still university is deciding its syllabi, the recent events have shown change in patterns of university’s decision making.
“Swachhta Abhiyaan and Good Governance Day was taken by the university after it was made mandatory by the ministry and further the ministry also asked for reports. Such things hampers university’s autonomy. DU VC Dinesh Singh is indulging in a bad kind of politics to save his chair. He is obeying RSS leaders and government for his personal benefits. This will affect the university,” said Habib.
“University should not be ruled by political headquarters or any agenda. Imposition of syllabus or transfer of faculty and students should not be done without discussing it with academicians of university,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, DU executive council member.
