Fungus found in Haldiram’s gulab jamun!

However, for the people in Greater Noida, it was a shocking moment when they found fungus in gulab jamuns bought from the popular sweet chain Haldiram’s.

After opening the gulab jamun tin cans at home, the customers, much to their shock, found fungus in them. Many of them reached the outlet with their cans and protested against being given the defiled product.

However, the outlet’s manager allegedly paid no heed to them. The customers later registered a complaint with food inspection department. Ajay Kumar Jaiswal, chief food inspector, Noida, said: ‘We have taken the samples of gulab jamuns on the basis of complaints and have destroyed the rest of the stock. We have also taken the samples of petha and dry fruits and have sent them for tests. We will take action once reports are out.’

He also informed that other sweets at the outlet met the required edible standards. Jaiswal warned customers to be aware of the adulterated sweets and buy them carefully.

Adulteration of food means not just cheating the consumers but also posing a serious health risk. It is a punishable offence under the provisions of Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. The chief food inspector said that if reports prove that the presence of fungus were due to the negligence and were deliberately sold, the licence of Haldiram’s, Greater Noida outlet will be cancelled.

Kapil Chauhan, manager, Haldiram’s Greater Noida outlet, denied these allegations when contacted by Millennium Post and refused to comment on why people and the chief food inspector were making these allegations.
