From the book of Life

The outpour of rain in a city reeling under the searing heat of June was a welcome change on  Thursday evening. Coinciding with the launch of Vinita Dawra Nangia’s book It’s your Life, the two events seemed to be ushering in a breath of fresh air in New Delhi. Nangia’s book is a compilation of her columns written for a national daily that reflect on contemporary life and relationships. She is a leading lifestyle writer who started her career as a fashion writer, introducing the phenomenon called Page 3.

After her time with Page 3 and the glittering world around it, her writings dwell on the complexities relationships and social issues that she observes around her. The evening was a quick witted interaction between Vani Tripathi, an actor and BJP’s national secretary and the writer.

The guest of Honour, PB Sharma, Delhi Technical University’s Vice Chancellor broke the ice in his opening remarks, saying, 'I was pretty scared to come to the event after reading the questions written over the invite - Who am I? Can I love two people at the same time? Am I guilty?- these were some of the questions that perturbed Sharma. Having read through the entire book, he found out his way out. Sharing his insights, he said, ‘Vinita’s book tells you that life is to be lived with courage and confidence.’

Reading out anecdotes from the book, Vani went on questioning Vinita on her escapades as a newbie fashion writer to someone who comments on contemporary living and relationships. Vani read parts from four columns titled, Everyone wants to be a star, Can you forgive a fling, Are you really honest and romance and love. Vinita cleared the air around her idea of romance. Succinctly putting it, she said, 'What emerges from ashes is the love that endures.' Elaborating on it, she explained that people build a bubble around them and find respite in the illusionary world. One has to understand, the sweet nothings, the compliments shall all come to an end one day. You can only retain the lovely memories but not expect the youthful romance to continue in the same way.

Vinita went on to say that she was lucky to cover fashion as a beginner. That’s where she learnt her early lessons. People in the fashion industry were creative and open minded, and her curiosity to learn about their life made her the writer she is.  Taking instances from real life, her book pushes her readers to take up a ‘can-do’ view of life to resolve their problems.
