Frida Kahlo: Living on her own terms

If there was one memorable woman who walked this earth, defying the conventions of age and time, living her life in her own terms — she would be Frida Kahlo. A woman who brought her every existing  moment to life, and gave every sensation a shape on the canvas.

A documentary on Frida Kahlo was screened at the Lalit Kala Academi on Thursday. It threw light on her life. Born as Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon  to Matilde Calderon y gonzales and Guillermo Kahlo, she contracted polio early on in her life. A bus accident, which scarred her life forever, brought her on the brink
with the harsh reality of life.

During her long convalescence from the accident, Frida started painting when doctors discovered three vertebrae out of place. In order to keep her spine stable, Frida’s torso was encased in a corset, the first of many such contraptions she wore during her lifetime. Her joining the Communist League with Diego and also her marriage to him as a third wife all became a part of her canvas. Her happiness, her belief in Communism — it all came alive in her works.

Later, Frida’s termination of  pregnancy due to medical complications, and also the likelihood of her not being able to carry a child as a result of the injuries sustained in 1925 accident — had a deep impact on her life. Her works mirrored a reflection of the pain she suffered her entire life.

She was almost on the deathbed when her work was exhibited at the Mexico City Gallery of Contemporary Art. But, such was her strength of mind that she hosted this exhibition from her four-poster bed.

At every step, she challenged and defied life even at the face of death. Till her last days Frida attended the protests against the CIA intervention in Guatemala. Till the end she lived her life to her own terms and never  gave into her pain till the time she couldn’t take it any more and died of pulmonary embolism. This extraordinary woman’s life was every bit a struggle and pain yet she lived on and not just lived, but left her footprints behind forever.
