Fresh floods in U’khand halt state relief work

The fresh bout of inclement weather has halted the government efforts to revive the rituals at Kedarnath temple. Manikarnika Temple, a favourite destination for devotees during the month of ‘Shravan’ was swept away by the waters of Bhagirathi as incessant rains lashed Uttarkashi on Thursday night, officials said.

On the other hand fresh attempts were launched to trace Almora SDM Ajay Arora, who slipped off a makeshift bridge and fell into the Mandakini river earlier in the week while leading a relief and rehabilitation operation. According to information coming from Uttarkashi, nobody was hurt as the temple was evacuated soon after the 16 June cloud burst in the area. The temple was rebuilt after 1991 earthquakes, which had witnessed severe devastation in Uttarkashi area and the Bhagirathi river valley.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the rituals at the devastation hit Kedarnath temple would begin from 11 August, the Naag Panchmi day. The date was decided at a high-level meeting between chief minister Vijay Bahuguna and officials of the Kedarnath Mandir Samiti. Rituals were stopped after flash floods ravaged the area 16 June.
