Free BRT lanes trial gets public thumbs-up

Until 17 May, vehicles would be allowed to move freely in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane, as per the orders of Delhi High Court. The six-day trial, which began on 12 May, is being conducted to judge the traffic movement over the weekdays.

Monitoring during the trial run would be done by Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), as well as observers from transport department that manages the BRT corridor.

'The CRRI will forward  the report of the trial to the traffic police and transport department on Monday, 21 May, for final approval,' said a traffic police officer who was monitoring the trail run.

For commuter like Surender Kumar (41), this is a blessing indeed. 'The traffic is now smoother and it takes less travelling time,' said Kumar. Another commuter, Mangal Singh, is also of the view that this would decongest the traffic and would benefit the commuters.

According to sources, at Chirag Delhi intersection, an additional lane has been earmarked for right turning traffic from Sheikh Sarai to Nehru Place. Similarly, an additional right turning traffic lane has been provided at Sheikh Sarai intersection for the oncoming traffic from Chirag Dilli enroute  Saket. Cyclists and other non-motorised vehicles would continue to use the pedestrian and cycling lanes that already exist.

'This trail run will allow for the change in movement of traffic pattern from 'Khanpur T-point to Siri Fort intersection. All straight and left turning traffic will move on the left and the lane adjacent to it, while right turning traffic will move on the next lane,' said sources.
