Freak accident throws 3-yr-old into boiling tub

The victim, Dev (two and a half years) was on his mother’s lap, was walking down the pavement in Trilokpuri on Tuesday evening. All of a sudden, an e-rickshaw hit her from behind and Dev fell into the big pot of boiling syrup outside a sweet shop on the accident spot, said a source.

He further said, mother of the victim, Pinky, rushed to the child’s rescue and she was joined by several other pedestrians and workers of the sweet shop. When all their efforts failed, the container had to be tumbled upside-down.

In the process, Pinky got her hands burnt too by putting them inside the boiling pot in order to save her child. Dev was first rushed to the LBS hospital in east Delhi, where they had said it was too late to help. He was again rushed to Safdarjung hospital where he was declared brought dead, said sources.

The e-rickshaw driver had speeded the vehicle and ran away within seconds. However, the vehicle was tracked down by Wednesday morning.

‘It was found that somebody had rented out the e-rickshaw to someone, and the second person had re-rented it to the accused, without seeing any documents,’ said a senior police official.

He further added that the accused has been identified and he will be arrested by Thursday. However, his identity wasn’t revealed. ‘The sweet shop is closed since the incident. And we are investigating whether there is an encroachment issue in this case,’ said the senior official.

The body of the victim wasn’t cremated till Wednesday evening and the family members carried it to the police station at Mayur Vihar and started demanding immediate justice, said sources. He further said, Pinky works as a house-maid in the east Delhi area. She went to the market to buy milk and she had carried her son along with her. The incident happened when they were heading back home in the evening.
