There are around 2,950 farmhouses in the national Capital out of which as many as 2,500 fall in South Delhi area.
“The farmhouse owners dump their garbage in open plots, at corners of village roads which is left to rot,” said Ratan Lal, a senior citizen in Dera village. The civic agencies don’t have any system to remove the garbage but take note only when they are deluged with calls. The villagers also allege rampant illegal construction in commercial farm houses which host marriages and functions besides traffic jams which spill onto main roads. “The blaring loud speakers are a menace and when we call police, they come and arrive at a cash settlement . The all night parties with blaring music spell misery for students, and patients at home,” said Mahendra Singh, a villager in Fatehpur Beri area.
A major chunk of farmhouses fall under south Delhi’s Chhatarpur constituency. Curiously, very few residents live in the farmhouses as in most cases, owners run flourishing real estate businesses from their premises, while the rest have allowed corporate houses to run their operations from there. “All types of illegal activities are conducted here in connivance with the police,” said Manish, a youth in Mandi village.
The farmhouses situated on the main roads are usually used to host social functions such as weddings. “Traffic is the major problem in the area, especially those adjacent to Fatehpur Beri is particularly congested,” said Rakesh Aggarwal, Manager at Pisces Garden in Chhatarpur. None of the political parties who are contesting in the upcoming Assembly election from Chhatarpur constituency have a clear agenda to address this issue.
“We promise to resolve the problems if any,” said Kartar Singh, AAP candidate. He further added that if any of the farm houses were unauthorized, AAP would initiate steps to set that with immediate effect. “There is no proper water supply but we manage with the help of private tankers. In the monsoon season or during unexpected rains, the roads become nightmarish. I want to vote for the government that will resolve these issues soon,” said Amrita Singh, a resident of Fatehpuri Beri.
Swachh Bharat Abhayan has no takers in the abode of the high and mighty. Though the BJP’s outgoing MLA Brahm Singh Tanwar looks confident of victory, he too does not have any plans for the farmhouse owners just yet.
