The incident took place when the woman, Namrata Bhargav, had gone through caesarean delivery at Fortis Hospital. A team of doctors led by Monica Wadhwan performed the surgery, but days after Bhargav was released from the hospital, she complained of chronic abdominal pain. She was even unable to feed her infant son due to severe pain in her stomach.
According to sources, Bhargav family alleged that despite intimating Fortis Hospital officials about the negligence, they paid no heed.
Bearing <g data-gr-id="43">excruciating</g> pain for almost six months, a medical examination conducted at a private hospital in Delhi had revealed that a large cotton gauze was allegedly left inside her stomach during the delivery. The gauze, which was as big as a hand towel, caused severe infection and damage to her intestinal wall.
“Namrata was getting all her regular check-ups done at Fortis when she was pregnant. She was taken for a caesarean on December <g data-gr-id="41">22,</g> and was discharged six days later. When Namrata left home, she was suffering from stomach pain which she thought was obvious after a surgery. Shockingly, the hospital authorities refused to own up their responsibility. Their negligence came to light after her medical check-up was conducted at a private hospital. We spent nearly Rs 7 lakh for her treatment,” informed a family member.
After the matter came to light, her family members approached police seeking penal action against the guilty doctors. However, police refused to take any action against the doctors. When the matter was brought to the notice of senior administrative officials, the district magistrate of Noida formed a team comprising Additional CMO, City Magistrate (Noida) and Deputy SP of the concerned area to investigate the matter.
During <g data-gr-id="32">investigation</g>, the hospital was found guilty and an FIR was lodged under Sector 58 at Noida police station. “Following the directions of district administration, we have registered a case against the doctors under Section 338 of IPC,” said Ravikant Parashar, SHO of Sector 58 police station.
