Earlier, there were reports that the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) were trying to rope in Iqbal for the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections. He emphasised that various like-minded parties should fight together and put up a grand show in Delhi. But Muslim intellectuals have expressed annoyance over MIM’s mission and said that they can play a divisive role in Muslim-dominated areas.
The Congress had got the worst drubbing in the last Delhi assembly polls as it was decimated to a humiliating eight seats. So now, the party is keen to launch damage control measures. According to Congress sources, the party high command gave a green signal and okayed Shoaib Iqbal’s induction in the party who is expected to join Congress on 20 November.
Iqbal’s son Alley Mohammad confirmed the news. In the last assembly polls, Muslims who had voted against the Congress, chose Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an alternative. In all Muslim-dominated constituencies, AAP managed to get more than 11,500 votes finishing either second or third respectively. However, large number of Muslims remained committed to the Congress, that proved to be a face-saver for the party in most Muslim-dominated seats.
