Minister of Manpower, Singapore, has cautioned against excessive tightening of foreign workers’ inflow into the state, saying this should be done at a pace which doesn’t harm the interests of the country.
Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin warned that policies which would make it difficult for companies to do business in Singapore would ultimately hurt Singaporeans, the Channel News Asia quoted him as saying. He elaborated that the tightening of foreign manpower in Singapore should be at a pace that enables it to grow in a sustainable way, yet protects the people’s interest.
Tan’s latest comments came days after he issued a written reply to a parliamentary question on the impact of restricting foreign workers in Singapore. He added that with hindsight, the inflow of foreigners could have been better calibrated.
In a message posted on his Facebook page on Thursday, Tan said economic growth is ‘not a bad word’, and having an attractive environment brings in good companies which in turn, provide good jobs for Singaporeans.
