Modi has already received a stack of middle school history textbooks earlier this month from the Youth Congress, which said it was a Diwali gift to help him ‘improve his knowledge’ of the subject.
After a series of such gaffes at public rallies, a gleeful Congress says the BJP leader is ‘making up history while he believes he is making history.’
At a rally on Tuesday evening, the Congress’ Digvijaya Singh accused the BJP of wanting to make ‘a man who has no proper knowledge of the country’s history and culture prime minister,’ insisting that Modi would be bested by a Class 10 or 12 student.
In his Patna rally that was targeted by serial blasts last month, Modi had said the ancient city of Taxila north-west of Islamabad was in Bihar. He also erroneously said that Alexander came to Bihar and died by the Ganges.
The Gujarat chief minister soon followed that up with an apparent mix-up between Gujarati freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma and Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the BJP’s predecessor Jan Sangh, saying Mookerjee had died abroad, unsung and ignored by all Congress governments.
Union minister Jairam Ramesh sniggered, ‘It is akin to my saying, Oh! Nehru was selling paint before he got into politics and confusing Jawaharlal Nehru with Arun Nehru.’ Digvijaya Singh has suggested, ‘Sushma Swaraj and Murli Manohar Joshi should give tuitions to Modi for a month to improve his knowledge.’
