For all the concerned citizens...

We have all known that the national capital is unsafe and have been told not to move out of the safety of home beyond a certain hour. In a lot of areas, the deadline is a ridiculous 7pm. But now, citizens have decided enough is enough. So if you feel the same, ditch the new year parties and go for these two movements to ‘reclaim the night’.

Following the protests that have been going on in the event of the ghastly gangrape, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University have decided to ditch the deadlines and step out into the night in a bid to show that women too have an equal right to step out of their homes at any time of the day or night. This walk today will be a protest against the patriarchal mindset of the society. The students will perform street plays, sing songs and there will be a lot other cultural activities. They will march along PVR Priya, through the malls of Vasant Kunj and into Mahipalpur and nearby areas. The JNU students will be joined by women’s organisations too.

A street party has also been planned by Citizen’s Collective Against Sexual Assault who plan to kick in the new year with a street party in a bid to take back the streets and make them safe. They want people to bring family, friends, lovers and pets and come ‘dented and painted’.

Yet another protest has been planned to condemn MP Abhijit Mukherjee’s tactless remarks on protesting women — calling them ‘dented and painted’. Start the new year with a protest march which is  largely for women though the organisers say ‘men are most welcome to show their solidarity’. The aim of the Dent and Paint parade is ‘to show sexist Parliamentarians and their associates that we will not bow down to patriarchy. This is no longer about rape, this is about our basic right to exist, just as we please.’ They want people to come in their ‘provocative best’ and bring music, posters, poems, experiences and stories.
