Football unites Ghana

What are Ghanaian sentiments towards football?
We eat football! Everybody knows who is playing, what position, everybody knows everything about their players! Everybody talks about football in Ghana.  You know its like, the one thing that unifies the nation. We are very much politically divided in the middle but in not in football. Everybody has an opinion on football; everybody is involved in football, so when the Black Stars are playing, that’s when everybody comes together. We just love soccer.  Most people will stop what they are doing when there is a major match going on, Accra comes to a standstill, and it’s the same way you guys are with cricket, they just love the game.

How is the sport promoted in Ghana?
There are leagues playing seasonal. Its encouraged in the high school, they have their soccer. In every village there is a football field and you will find little kids playing football, sometimes they may not have a proper football, but they have a way of getting socks, they fill it with worn out clothes and make a ball and play. So every boy is playing football, all the boys just play football. Now even the girls are playing football. I think that lifts a lot of people out of poverty because if you play well enough and get to the European leagues then your family is taken care of. I can’t imagine any child beginning to talk, who doesn’t know football!

Do you personally indulge in football?
Love it. As does every Ghanaian. I get very
happy when our side wins and deeply upset when we lose. We carry football in our hearts.
