Food, friends and happiness

When you live alone in a city, your friends become family and you get to drag them across the place to help with work, of course with the promise of free food. Yes, free food promise always works - tried and tested!

This week I dragged my Delhi family to two very cool dos - a review at Diggin Cafe and a new menu launch at Beer Cafe Biggie at Connaught Place.

We shall talk Diggin first. Hands down this is one of the prettiest cafes I have seen till date. It gives you a lovely feel of happy springs and English summers (No. Indian summers are not nice) with a profusion of greens, flowers, birds and very happy bees.

The inspiration apparently came from London’s Covent Garden, explained the cafe manager adding that the main idea was to provide a summery happy feeling that is best enjoyed over some great food with friends and iced drinks.

Right from the outside of the cafe to the lovely wooden stairs that take you up to the first floor, you would well want to move the cafe tables and chairs elsewhere and move in bag and baggage.

After sufficiently gushing about how pretty it all is, we decided to start our meal with the Caesar salad and the bacon stuffed chicken.

The salad was a heady shot of fresh greens with bacon bits and a light dressing while the bacon stuffed chicken can be a little dry on the palette so it is best to have it with the fresh tomato and olive gravy they serve it with.

We picked the All Bacon sandwich, Rosemary Chicken and the Pan-seared fish with lemon sauce for the mains. The sandwich was pure indulgence and is a must, must, must try for anyone who loves their bacon and pork. The chicken and the fish comes with some very yummy mashed potatoes and those who know me will guess as much that I high jacked the potatoes and left the chicken and the fish for the others on the table. Diggin also has thin crust pizzas  and pastas that I promised to try the next time I am there - we had ordered way too much food this time to make room for it.

The long lunch winded up with the hazelnut pie, which was incredibly sinful and delicious and the coffee crème brûlée which I again ignored for the sake of chocolate and hazelnuts. Bliss!
A meal for two comes to about Rs 1200 (without taxes) - so not very harsh on your pocket; the portions are generous and quite enough for two assuming you are looking at sharing one main dish between two. . Diggin scores over other South Delhi cafes by the virtue of location - right opposite Gargi College and not in a crowded place like Hauz Khas Village!), ambience and some of their pick foods. A must visit !
