Following traffic rules may get you that elusive selfie moment with a celeb: Delhi Traffic Police

Delhi Traffic Police have taken a new initiative to encourage people to follow traffic rules by luring them with the help of celebrities. The drive will be launched from next week and initially 10 spots will be covered. The celebrities include film stars, cricketers and other <g data-gr-id="59">sport</g> personalities. However, the names and the spots have not been disclosed to keep the drive a surprise.

This year till June 11, as many as 2,62,240 persons have been prosecuted for jumping red light signal. However, the data of last year was slightly more, around 3,26,178 persons were <g data-gr-id="63">challaned</g> in 2014 till June 11. Around 14,852 people have been <g data-gr-id="64">challaned</g> for drunken driving in 2015 whereas last year the number of challans <g data-gr-id="58">were</g> 14,113. This year, as many as 2,68,585 persons were <g data-gr-id="66">challaned</g> for not wearing helmets while riding two-wheelers in the national Capital <g data-gr-id="57">whereas</g> in 2014, 2,48,357 persons were prosecuted for the same.

“We have identified 10 spots to execute our drive from next week. The spots are specifically made near traffic junctions. Our officers with a hidden camera will be standing near the spots to identify who have followed all traffic rules. It will include how the rider is driving, if s/he is riding a two-wheeler whether he is wearing a helmet or not, is the driver following red light signal and lane driving,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

“If we find anyone filling in that bracket, the person will be stopped by a traffic cop and he will get an opportunity to meet a celebrity. The celebrity will be standing nearby the spots and the rewarded person will also get a chance to click a selfie with the star. All the sequence will be video-shoot and it will be uploaded on social networking websites.”

Delhi Traffic Police have also prepared a special goody bag for the winners that will be either given
by the celebrity or a senior traffic cop. The winner will also get a reward of Rs 500 from Delhi Traffic Police. “We will also use a honey-trap by making a blind person stand at the roadside. Let’s see who will help him cross the road or board a public transport,” the officer added.

“Violators will be prosecuted for sure and we will make them realise that he missed a chance to be a winner of the drive,” he said.

This is not the first time that Delhi Traffic Police have urged celebrities to encourage road safety or traffic rules. In various awareness programmes, Delhi Police have invited film stars to encourage people follow traffic rules and regulations.
