FM allocates Rs 587 cr more for Delhi Police

The Finance Minister on Thursday raised the allocated budget for Delhi Police to Rs 4,455.21 crore for the next fiscal year, an increase of Rs 587.88 crore from the last budget. The increase in budget allocation comes after demands were raised in the past year that the department be spruced up, in terms of training and infrastructure,  to provide better security to the people, especially women, in the National Capital.

Funds for personnel training, technology upgradation, new traffic signals and housing were the highlights of the Rs.4,555.21 crore allocation for Delhi Police in the 2013-14 union budget, an increase of 16 per cent from the last fiscal year.

'In comparison to the allocated budget of Rs.3,918.71 crore in the ongoing fiscal, we have been allocated Rs.4,555.21 crore in the next fiscal year,' said an official in the Delhi Police.The budget allocates Rs.1 crore, Rs.2 crore and Rs.4 crore for upgradation of training, induction of latest technology and installation of traffic signals respectively. 'In the budget presented in Lok Sabha, the city police was allocated a total of Rs.421.68 crore under plan head while Rs.4,133.53 crore was earmarked for non-planned expenditure,' the official added.

Less than 20 per cent of the over 83,000 personnel employed by the Delhi Police have been provided housing facility by the department. The budget allocates Rs 223.32 crore for the construction of buildings for official purposes.

Rs 11.71 crore has been earmarked for developing traffic and communication network and a model traffic system, down from Rs 20 crore last year, of which only Rs 13 crore was utilised.
