The flood fury in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh following incessant rainfall in the past few days has left 61 people dead. According to reports, the government was hoping for early relief from the week-long rains. In Odisha, Ganjam remained the worst-hit district as death toll in the state rose to 19.
‘All the deaths were due to wall collapse and drowning,’ special relief commissioner P K Mohapatra said. Rains led to fresh floods in Budhabalang river in Mayurbhanj district with water gushing into district headquarters town of Baripada and 50 other villages. In Ganjam, about 60 villages have been affected, whereas the total number of affected people spread over 10 districts reached 16.50 lakh.
Meanwhile, incessant rains lashing Andhra Pradesh for the last five days have claimed 42 lives so far in various rain-related incidents like wall collapse and inundated crops in about eight lakh hectares, agency reports from Hyderabad said.
