The fissures became visible as Congress workers gathered outside the residence of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Jai Prakash Agarwal and protested. These protests were against a group of party workers who had reportedly complained to party vice-president Rahul Gandhi that six MLAs and two party ministers should not be given party tickets, as there were problems with their working style.
The ministers against whom the complaint was made include Ramakant Goswami and Kiran Walia.
The protests happened even as Agarwal was chairing a meeting of the MLAs and ministers named in the complaint. Rahul had reportedly called Agarwal and asked him to sort out the issue of infighting amicably at his level.
‘Some block presidents, district presidents and councillor had met Rahul Gandhi few days ago and complained against the MLAs from their constituencies and questioned their winnability, performance and social behaviour. Gandhi then directed DPCC president Aggrawal to handle the situation and he called a meeting of the MLAs and other leaders,’ a party source said.
Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami from Rajendra Nagar, education minister Kiran Walia from Malviya Nagar, MLA Rajesh Lilothia from Patel Nagar, Neeraj Baisoya from Kasturba Nagar and Jaswant Rana from Narela were present at the meeting.
The Central Election Committee of the Congres has reportedly decided to keep the names of some sitting MLAs on hold owing to several factors working against them. Earlier, former Congress councillor and DPCC’s spokesperson Jitender Kocher had opposed Walia’s candidature.
Kocher is seeking a ticket for himself from Malviya Nagar in place of Prof Walia, while Manish Chatrath has opposed Ramakant Goswami’s name from Rajendra Nagar.
