Despite harsh measures against ragging, a first- year student of the faculty of law, Delhi university, was allegedly ragged by his seniors on 7 March. A complaint in this regard has been lodged by the student against his seniors in Maurice Nagar police station.
Amit Kumar of Campus Law Centre, Delhi university, was allegedly ragged by two of his seniors, Chandan Kumar and Narendar Yadav, on 7 March during a college fest. They had apparently asked him to dance. When he refused, they began threatening him. Amit said he was so scared that he left the fest immediately.
According to Amit, the next morning both the senior students, along with two other boys, waylaid him and beat him up. They also snatched away his wallet, which had Rs 4,700 in cash, and his college identity card and library card. 'They then warned me against telling anyone about the incident,' said Kumar.
When contacted, Om Pal Singh, Depuy Proctor of Delhi university, said 'It is very shameful for all of us and this prestigious university to have such incidents reported in spite of so many initiatives taken by the Delhi university administration against ragging. We are providing a lot of information to the students regarding ragging in hostels as well as on the campus. We have also organised seminars to generate awareness among the students.' Amit Kumar has lodged a complaint against the senior students at the Maurice Nagar police station.
