Fire devours slum cluster in Bawana, two children dead

A major fire broke out in a slum cluster in outer Delhi's Bawana on Friday afternoon. So far two children had died and six persons received critical burn injuries. Four fire department officials were injured when a heated argument between the public and the officials turned violent.

The incident was reported to the fire department at 1.35 pm and more than a dozen fire tenders were sent to J J Colony, the fire officials said. Finding the fire out of control, few more fire tenders were sent out. 'We sent 20 fire tenders, but an angry mob, meanwhile, attacked the fire department officials,' the official added.

More than 5,000 shanties were burnt to the ground and around 350 were partially damaged in the fire. The injured people were rushed to the nearby Maharishi Valmiki Hospital where two children were pronounced dead.

The children were identified as Sartaj, 5, and Manish, 4. However, rest of the injured are yet to be identified.

Armed with stones and sticks, a mob attacked the fire officials for delaying the rescue operation. A fire tender was also vandalised by the mob. 'Four fire department officials, identified as Sandeep, Sukhdev, Rakesh and  Jaswant, were beaten up by the angry mob, the official added.

'Four fire service officials were injured in the attack. They have been admitted to the hospital and their condition is stated to be stable,' Delhi Fire Service director A K Sharma said.

The reason behind the fire is still unknown.

Meanwhile, Delhi government has announced that it would put up a few tents for the victims so that they can stay there until things are sorted out.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is in constant touch with the district authorities for providing help to the fire tragedy victims. She has deputed the deputy commissioner and senior officers along with local MLA to take care of affected persons. The revenue department has arranged proper tents, food and water etc for victims,' saidspokesperson of Delhi government.
