Fire breaks out at Shastri Bhavan

A minor fire broke out at the corridor of the Ministry of External Affairs, on the first floor of Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday evening. Neither any causality nor any damage to documents has been reported after the incident.

According to the Delhi Fire Department Service, a call concerning the fire was received at around 6.20 pm, informing of smoke emission from the first floor, following which, five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Within 20 minutes, the fire was brought under control.

“At 6.40 pm, the fire was doused. No one was injured as the building was empty at the time of the fire,” a fire official said. He further added that preliminary investigation suggests that the fire broke out because of overheating of the electricity wire over the sealing in the corridor. Further investigation is underway.

The building has the offices of the ministries of petroleum, steel and coal among many others.

Shastri Bhawan has been in the news ever since the police said that classified documents from the building had been leaked by government employees and sold to private companies.
