In yet another case of medical negligence, an FIR has been lodged against five doctors of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for an incident that took place in September 2013 when a woman was operated upon with an urological problem but later died allegedly due to excessive bleeding.
The FIR was lodged on 6 August at Rajinder Nagar police station after being directed by the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate, Tis Hazari in June. The FIR has been lodged against Dr Sudhir Khanna, Dr Manu Gupta, Dr Sanjay Mittal, Dr Anurag Gupta and Dr V S Bedi of the hospital. ‘We have asked concerned authority in the Government of NCT of Delhi to construct a medical board in order to establish the negligence charges against the doctors,’ said Alok Kumar, ACP (central). He further said, police investigations can be resumed only after a detailed report is availed from the medical board.
Urmila Devi, 48, died on 6 September, 2013, after the doctors at Ganga Ram hospital allegedly cut her external iliac artery (larger of the two terminal branches of the common iliac artery) during the surgery leading to her death.
‘My wife was diagnosed with a rare disease called retroperitoneal fibrosis (disease that causes ureters to get narrowed resulting in backflow of urine to the kidneys) in April 2013. A minor stent operation was done at the hospital on April 24 last year for temporary relief from the disease. The doctors at the hospital suggested robotic surgery for the permanent cure of the disease and the date of surgery was fixed on September 4, 2013. My wife died two days later,’ said Prem Kishore, husband of Urmila Devi.
The hospital, however, refuted medical negligence charges by issuing a statement which said: ‘All treating doctors have done their best while rendering medical services to this patient, who had a complicated disease. She suffered a known complication of such surgery. There is no medical negligence on the part of the treating doctors in this unfortunate episode. However, the patient’s husband has not accepted this unexpected demise and has approached the investigating agencies. They are investigating the matter and hospital is fully committed to provide cooperation to them.’
