FIR lodged against Akhlaq, his family

A day after court’s order, Noida police on Friday filed an FIR of cow slaughter against Mohammad Akhlaq’s family. “As per judicial magistrate’s instruction, FIR was registered against Akhlaq’s family under the Cow Slaughter Act,” Anurag Singh, Circle Officer, Dadri, told media.

On Thursday, Surajpur Court had ordered investigation and lodging of an FIR of cow slaughter against Akhlaq’s family following which police had said they would conduct a free and fair probe in the matter. Jaan Mohammad, brother of Akhlaq, had on Thursday said the court’s decision has to be respected but the investigation should be fair.

In September last year Akhlaq (52) was beaten to death and injured his son Danish after dragging them out of their home in Bisada following rumours that he and his family had stored and consumed beef.

A few days later, his son Danish was also beaten up brutally by the mob when the family was attacked. The terrorised family left the village and are living in Delhi, along with Akhlaq’s elder son, an Air Force technician.

A forensic report in May this year said the meat found in a dustbin outside Akhlaq’s home was beef or the meat of “a cow or its progeny”, after which a mahapanchayat was held in the village that called for action against Akhlaq’s family. Later, the accused in murder approached the court seeking FIR against Akhlaq and his family.
