In a bid to enhance security, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has finally started installing close circuit television cameras (CCTV) in its buses.
According to the DTC, CCTV cameras will be installed in 200 buses in the first phase.
‘A Hyderabad-based company has started to install CCTV in 200 DTC buses (100, AC and 100 non-AC) in first phase. The process of installing CCTV under first phase will be completed within seven days. Each bus will have three CCTV cameras which would have coverage of entire area inside the bus,’ DTC spokesperson RS Minhas said. This is the first time that CCTV cameras are finally being installed in DTC buses. The Sheila Dixit led government had been mulling with the idea for many years in the past.
Minhas added that the company will also look after the operation of CCTVs for the next five years. ‘Each CCTV would have the capacity of storing the recordings of around 15 days. The footage of these cameras would be monitored on daily basis,’ he added. The DTC official further added that the cameras would be installed in more buses after the review of the first phase.
Another DTC official, requesting anonymity said, ‘if a passenger’s behaviour is found to be suspicious in a DTC bus, police will be informed immediately.’ ‘With this project, theft can be detected in buses and accused can easily be identified,’ he added.
