The BJP candidate from Mehrauli, Pravesh Sahib Verma, son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, is confident of trouncing the veteran Jat leader.
‘The people of are fed up with fake promises of Congress and its sitting MLA. He miserably failed on all fronts of development. People are deprived off basic amenities like drinking water, sewage, roads, besides price rise, which has made their life miserable,’ said Pravesh Verma.
Verma who had initially faced the ire of two prominent local BJP leaders, Sher Singh Dagar and Sarita Choudhary, feels more comfortable now as Delhi BJP Chief, Vijay Goel, has managed to facilitate a patch up. Under the patch up announced recently, Dagar and Choudhary’s husband Azad Singh have been appointed vice-presidents in the Delhi BJP unit. Sarita Choudhary is presently the mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Dagar, meanwhile, was the BJP candidate in 2008 that lost to Shashtri by just 1108 votes.
‘After an initial hiccup, the party is united and every leader is campaigning for the party’, said Sunil Yadav, a senior BJP leader. In 2008 the second runner on this seat was an independent Satbir Singh who bagged 14,954 votes followed by BSP’s 5694 votes. This time out of eight candidates two independents are also in the fray. However, this time the fight for Mehrauli is being seen as a two-way contest between the BJP and Congress.
‘The price rise and development are the main issues besides water logging, water provision, electricity, sewage and traffic in the area,’ said most of the voters in the area. The signs of anti-incumbency against both the Congress government and its local MLA are out in the open for this particular seat. The BJP is also banking upon the ‘outsider’ factor, which they believe is applicable to Shahstri, as he contested from the Malviya Nagar seat earlier, before his victory for the Mehrauli seat in 2008. Furthermore, Shashtri hails from Haryana, while Verma is local for Delhi.
‘Mundka is a BJP citadel so winning a seat against a Congress citadel is even more exciting for me. I am no outsider, I am a Delhiite,’ said Verma. His uncle Azad Singh, mayor North DMC, is contesting from his father’s assembly constituency Mundka. The area is a blend of village and colonies. It is a constituency dominated by the Jat community. It has around 1.30 lakh voters and comprises Saket, Vasant Kunj, Rajokri, Kishan Garh, Masoodpur, Press Enclave and the villages of Katwaria Sarai, Ber Sarai and Lado Sarai.
