The city witnessed massive traffic jams on Sunday, especially on Ring Road, in ITO and Connaught Place areas due to the ongoing festive season. It being a weekend as well, people went on shopping spree, which led to heavy traffic snarls in areas like Raja Garden, Vikas Marg, Chirag Delhi and Nehru Place.
Metro was also overcrowded, especially during the afternoon. The main intersections, especially Parliament street, Ring road, Daryaganj, ITO, Tilak marg, Sikandra marg, Delhi gate, JLN marg, Bhairon marg and Ranjeet Singh flyover faced slow traffic.
‘I was on my way to a movie theatre in south Delhi, but it took me one hour to cross Chirag Delhi. Generally, it takes just 10 minutes everyday,’ said a college student.
‘I left from Safdarjung Enclave and have been stuck in front of AIIMS for the last 30 minutes,’ said Manish Arora, a public relations executive, heading towards Connaught Place.
Metro also remained overcrowded, and many opted for autorickshaws.
‘The autorickshaw drivers are charging double the amount’ said Aruna Mishra, a home-maker.
‘Traffic jams have been an issue since ages, and the government does not even bother to do something about it. The auto drivers refuse to go to many places, and do not go by meter,’ said a commuter. ‘I was charged Rs 90 to go from Connaught Place to Pandara Road,’ said a commuter.
