Ferrer beats Simon to enter quarters

Ferrer beat Gilles Simon of France 6-2, 6-3, while Wawrinka defeated Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-3, 6-2. Wawrinka stayed in contention for one of the two remaining ATP finals spots.

The seventh-seeded Swiss rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first set and broke Almagro twice in the second. Wawrinka outplayed Almagro, hitting 26 winners to 13 for the Spaniard and making only 15 unforced errors. Ferrer hit an overhead shot from the baseline to break for a 4-2 lead in the second. The third-seeded Spaniard saved the two break points he faced. Top-seeded Rafael Nadal, defending champion David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro moved into the third round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

Nadal beat Marcel Granollers 7-5, 7-5 in an all-Spanish meeting, Ferrer overcame Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, and Del Potro beat Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Novak Djokovic rallied from a set down Thursday to beat John Isner 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2 and reach the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.

Isner saved six break points to force the early tiebreaker and took the first set when Djokovic’s backhand sailed wide.
