Federer stunned in Gstaad

Roger Federer’s worrying slump continued on Thursday when he was knocked out of the Gstaad Open by world number 55 Daniel Brands. The German spoiled former world number one Federer’s return to the tournament after nine years with a shock 6-3, 6-4 second round upset.

Federer, who saved two match points before going down, had laboured for three sets a week ago in Hamburg to beat Brands. World number five Federer has won only the Halle title this season after claiming his 17th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2012. Last week, he was stunned in the Hamburg semifinals.

Serb Janko Tipsarevic continued a luckless 2013 run as the third seed was knocked out in his opening match at the Swiss Open 6-2, 6-2 by Dutchman Robin Haase on Thursday.

Radawanska wins Stanford opener

STANFORD: World number four Agnieszka Radwanska easily defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-3 in her opening match at the WTA Tour’s Stanford tournament.
The top seed in the hardcourt tournament, had a bye through the first round, and won 60 percent of her first serve points in the 84-minute second round contest.  She will now face sixth-seeded American Varvara Lepchenko.
