Cilic, who won two tournaments and reached the final of another in February, raced to a 5-0 lead against the former world number one from Serbia in just 20 minutes and wrapped up the first set in less than half an hour.
But Djokovic, who won the Indian Wells title in 2008 and 2011, kept his cool, and didn’t face a break point in taking the second and third sets. In the quarterfinals Djokovic will face France’s Julien Benneteau, who beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).
Four-time champion Roger Federer eased into the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells ATP Masters on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Germany’s Tommy Haas.
Federer, the former world number one who won titles here in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012, posted his third successive straight-sets victory to set up a meeting with South African Kevin Anderson.
Anderson defeated Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (7/1), 4-6, 6-1 to scupper an all-Swiss quarterfinal.
Paes-Stepanek bow out
INDIAN WELLS: Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek went down fighting to Swiss duo of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in the men’s doubles quarterfinals. The unseeded Swiss stars beat the fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair 3-6, 7-6 (6), 4-10 in an hour and 19 minutes battle.
