February 2015 elections to be battle for Congress survival

Delhi Congress will face a real test of survival in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections that are likely to be held by February of the new year. The grand old party which faced a major defeat in November 2013 was almost routed in mid of 2014, after losing all the seven Lok Sabha seats.

In the year 2013-14, the Congress was almost reduced to the likes of a regional party, having been defeated in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand. The Congress party had lost even in Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, UP, and Odisha, states which were all under the strong hold of the Congress since 1988.

The Congress was reduced to a humiliating eight seats in the last Delhi Assembly elections. In the previous elections, the traditional voters such as Muslims and Dalits, who are the backbones of Congress party, were ignored during the campaigns. Reportedly, Muslims chose to vote the newbie party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an alternative to the Congress. AAP had also won nine Dalits seats. However, a large section of these communities remained committed to Congress, saving the party’s face in most Muslim dominated seats.

Out of the eight seats that Congress managed to retain, five seats were those from Muslim dominated areas such as Ballimaran, Okhla, Mustafabad, Seelampur and Chandni Chowk.
