The India Art Fair 2017 witnessed an enviable gathering of the city's finest artists and connoisseurs alike. A wide range of art on display, each piece was exquisite with a reflection of skilled craftsmanship. Surrounded by such rich display of talent, we made our way toward the Czech booth.
Ms Michaela McClelland, Managing Director Preciosa, welcomed us to the mesmerizing world of crystals. At the heart of her company is the Bohemian Chandelier, a true reflection of the Preciosa's DNA and origin. While their creations draw inspiration from the classic Austrian-Hungarian designs and forms, over the years they have evolved their craftsmanship to blend in more contemporary nuances.
It is fascinating how the Bohemian crystal has travelled the world for generations, showcasing craftsmanship of a quality and form that cannot be found anywhere else in the world! Today, they grace not just private residences and palaces of select few, but have also influenced and reached many hotels and other commercial projects. Dedicated and continuous R&D at Preciosa has helped the crystal glass evolve and take new and modern forms. Success stories at Preciosa are defined by the complexity of the assignments.
With an enviable base of highly skilled and tenured artists, the company prides in taking up projects that no one else dares to. Their love for difficult work stems from their belief that they have the skill and capability to deliver. Today, the largest competitor for Swarovski, Preciosa stands dedicated to herald the legacy of crystal glass.
While they have been in the market for 20 years now, this is the first year of their taking on the responsibility to explain and educate people artistically the story of crystal glass – where does it come from and why does it look this way. Michaela also explained what goes into creating these beautiful pieces. An important characteristic of the Bohemian crystal glass is the sand used. Found in the mountains of northern Bohemia, this sand is rich in Silica making it very soft and supple.
This litheness helps the artists shape and contour very well. Thereafter ensues a very intricate process of styling and detailing – a process not just complex but also one that requires exquisite skills and precision. At the end of this grueling process in craftsmanship arrive the beautiful Bohemian Crystal and Chandeliers – enthralling and mesmerizing everyone by its sheer beauty and intricacies.
