Musical night at IGNCA

‘All night’ concert is organised by IGNCA and will be held today, to celebrate its Foundation day

To celebrate the day IGNCA was founded, an overnight music festival is being organised at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) on November 19. Reviving the tradition of overnight concerts in Shankar Lal Hall, Modern school in the 1970s and 1980s – Delhi is welcome to re-live the all night sessions that used to be held in the old times.

Somehow this tradition lapsed, and it will be very interesting for the music lovers in the capital to enjoy the old memories with IGNCA The reason of having the 'All night' concert, has a context distinct to Hindustani music only, which follows the Time Theory of Ragas. So to hear Ragas of the late night pre dawn and dawn, one has to listen to music all through the night.

The lineup of artists in this event is impressive, and varied in content and features six artists . Abhishek Raghuram, Carnatic vocalist will start the night's proceedings. With an impressive musical lineage from both sides of his family, Abhishek is one of the finest vocalists today, and incidentally, also exceedingly popular. In his words "I have enjoyed performing at Delhi. The 'rasikas' of Delhi have been warm and receptive to all genres of music. I am looking forward to performing in the capital city yet again". He will be followed by Ayaan Ali Khan on sarod. Vidushi Arti Ankalikar Tikekar representing the Jaipur Attrauli gharana gayaki will be next, followed by Taal Yogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar and his band of six accompanists including four percussionists (tabla, African instrument 'djembe', pakhawaj and Peruvian instrument 'cajon') in a concert entitled 'Taal Kirtan'. This will be presented as a seven member act in Delhi for the first time. "It's always a pleasure to perform in Delhi," said Pandit Suresh Talwalkar.

The next item will be the ever popular Maihar gharana Mumbai based sitarist Purbayan Chatterji. He reveals in unusual collaborations, (his duets with vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty and flautist Shashank Subramanyam amongst others have been making waves internationally), fusion, and additionally plays his version of an electronic sitar.

Despite this, Purbayan verbalised his excitement in playing 'a classical solo', as he termed it. Concluding the festival will be Delhi gharana's Khalifa, Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan whose family trace their musical lineage from Amir Khusrau. Khan sahib said, "5 am in the moring is the time for worship, so my performance will be by way to worship." The team expects Delhi audience come out in large numbers for this interesting event.
