Madhavi: A twist to Indian mythology

A dance festival exploring two dynamic female characters Shoorpanakha and Draupadi will be held at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre on April 3, 7 pm onward. Titled 'Madhavi', the performance talks about how these female characters are often misunderstood in our culture.

The first act Shoorpanakha (The Story Only She Nose) will see Dakshina Vaidyanathan Baghel bringing an extremely fresh approach and a twist to the story we all know. The demon princess who was Ravana's sister was a normal loving sister and wife, before tragedy struck her life. This changed her into a scheming woman who became the prime reason for a war.

Draupadi ( Still I Rise), a 60 minute show will be presented by Vidhya Subramanian – an internationally known dancer and choreographer who has made a mark as a thinking dancer. In 'Still I Rise', she has intelligently fused the mediums of Bharatanatyam and theatre to create an extremely innovative work exploring the trials and strengths of Draupadi.
