'I prefer youth-centric roles'

Shantanu Maheshwari on playing a college student again

Popularly known for his debut performance in the show 'Dil Dosti Dance' on Channel V, Shantanu Maheshwari is back with a medical drama 'Medically Yourrs'. Created and produced by Ekta Kapoor's ALTBalaji, the show is about the lives of medical students – their struggles, competition they face, the peer pressure, and much more.

On playing the lead, Shantanu shares how this show is different in terms of story, his character, reason of choosing youth-centric roles, and a lot more.

There have been many medical dramas shown in the past. How is 'Medically Yourrs' different?

Unlike other shows, 'Medically Yourrs' entirely focusses on the actual struggles of medical students. I personally never imagined a medical student's life to be so tough, and playing this character has given me a true picture of the actual reality. Also, there have been a lot of 'firsts' for me in this web series. By default, this show has an instant youth connect, which distinguishes it from other shows revolving around the same theory. I would say that it is a very relatable concept not only for medical students but students, in general.

Tell us something about your character?

I play the role of Abir Basu, who is a very naive, immature, complexed and selfish guy, but at the same time is fun loving. His heart and mind are never on the same page. While he loves music, but his family background (which is of doctors) constantly keeps him under a pressure to prove his worth to his father. In the show, Abir is seen dealing with major changes in life.

Even in the past you have played a school/ college teenager. When will the audience see you in some different role?

I want to do youth-centric stories because I feel that there are so many problems and stories that we can explore in this genre. Also, the storytelling is faster, and I personally enjoy this kind of narrative. I would love to stick to this space as much as I can because I feel it has a lot to offer. And even I feel that my appearance makes me a good fit to play such kind of roles. So honestly, if I can manage to pull off my young look well enough, I would love to stick to this space as much as I can.

Actor, dancer, host, you have explored it all. Which one is your favourite? Why?

Above all, I am a performer. So be it any platform, I give my best. All three of them have helped me enhance my performance.
