Depicting surreal aspects of human, animal life
The crow, the owl, the cat, are all there. Yet, exploring the small format, Shuvaprasanna, the artist of large canvasses delves into the crevices of the mind, where the surreal blends with daily reality, rendering this show a real treat for art lovers and connoisseurs to see his recent works after his Retrospective in 2011. The solo exhibition of renowned artist Shuvaprasanna titled 'Mixed Media (Small format)' kicked off on November 16 evening at the Art Exposure gallery in South Kolkata. The exhibition, curated by Soma Bhowmik, will be on display from November 16 to December 15 from 12 pm to 8 pm.
For this show he has chosen to work on small format using mixed media comprising acrylic, charcoal and special ink. In this exceptional group of paintings the artist optimizes the possibilities of the intimate format and the medium both technically and aesthetically. His handling of the visual space and the medium is as intense as the images which arrive from the horizon of mind-scape which is rich with visual observations over a long period of time. "The animals in the paintings often look like sculpture. It is merely looking at reality from a different perspective", Shuvaprasanna told Millennium Post.
The artist's deep response to contemporary life and its complex situation is also evident in the depiction of human beings – as deeply staring faces or disenchanted figures or contorted bodies. Twisted bodies and their bizarre gestures and whacky facial expressions often refer to the actions performed in mime or circus. But they also refer, metaphorically, to the trapeze of life, to how human beings are compelled to enact in the real social life. "It has given me immense pleasure to work with different media and in a smaller format. I do expect the art lovers to enjoy the paintings on display", said Shuvaprasanna.
There are 25 paintings, all of them in mixed media on paper that will be on display at the gallery. Art Exposure was established by Uma Mitra in the year 2006, to pay homage to her late father Kalyan Bose who not only dedicated his life to art but also to the children's art education. Art Exposure works with renowned artists of India like Shuvaprasanna, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Jogen Chowdhury, Thota Vaikuntam, Late Suhas Roy, and many more. The gallery not only exhibited in India but also the leading art centers of the world.
