Bombers by chance

The ZEE 5 show, which is directed by Vishal Furia, was premiered on June 22, 2019. Besides Aahana Kumra and Varun Mitra, the show also stars actors like Prince Narula, Ranvir Shorey and Sapna Pabbi

As the web platform is bombarding with new genres or unaddressed issues, many filmmakers and actors are shifting to this space to experiment with ideas and bring up something fresh for the viewers . One such web series is 'Bombers' (a Zee5's original).

Though, the show directed by Vishal Furia, has many known faces, Millennium Post recently spoke to the lead actors Varun Mitra and Aahana Kumra (Varun's love interest in the show), in order to know about the concept of this web series, their individual experiences, roles and much more.

How did 'Bombers' happen to both of you?

Varun: I was at a GQ event, where I met Sapna, and she told me that the makers of the show were considering me for the role of Badol. And, soon I was approached by Vishal, the director, and right after that, I was on board to play the character. I was later told by the producers that my 'Ted talk' (in which I spoke about my football story in school) last year, made them feel that I was a good fit for the role.

Ahana: For me it happened all by chance, unaware of 'Bombers' being made, I was already shooting for another show in Shimla – where I got a call from the casting director, Kunal. Then, he told about the concept of the show which revolves around football, and that it is being produced by Zee. As I had already worked with Zee in the past, I was interested in taking up the project.

Tell us something about the show? What is the concept? What is different for the audience?

Varun: The biggest of the show is that in the era of crime and gangster shows being made, this show proves to be a breath of fresh air for the audience. Being a football based thrilling drama, 'Bombers' is about Badol, who has lost his initial team and is facing a lot of problems in order to put the team back together. All in all, it is a story of redemption.

Ahana: Yes, this the show truly makes a difference with its concept being 'football'. I don't think too many people have attempted football-based series in recent times.

Other things which make this show unique are its humongous cast and shooting in Kolkata. As, football is huge in Kolkata, shooting there was fun.

How was the journey of shooting the show?

Varun: Honestly, for me, it was extremely tiring and physically exhausting. We used to play football for almost 8 hours at nights. Being a web series, obviously, it had a hectic schedule, but creatively it was a satisfying experience. I feel every time I get to play a new character, it brings out a different side of my personality.

Besides my character and a great story line, it was a great experience to work with all the actors. I must say that earlier I was nervous as they all are such great actors. But as the days passed, everything became easier.

Ahana: Haha, seems like Varun summed it all up for me. I had a great time too. As I was playing Varun's love interest, I didn't have a lot of screen space with the other actors. But definitely, I have to say that Varun is an amazing person to work with.

Why did you sign this project?

Varun: When I was in school, I was a part of the football team. I was a left midfield and never really got even close to being captain. But as you can see, on this show I am playing the role of the team's captain.

Therefore, for me, I was sort of living my childhood dream via this show. Obviously, every role is unique as it takes a part of your own individual self to it, but I believe that Badols aura will resonate with me for months to come.

Ahana: As I said earlier, I signed the project because of Zee. But more than that, I was getting an opportunity to work with great actors like Varun and Sapna. I've always wanted to share screen space with younger actors, who are willing to learn.

What were your initial expectations from this show?

Varun: After working in this industry for so long now, I have learned not to have expectations. I feel that this way it just works better. As they say 'kaam karo, fal ki icchha matt kro.'

Ahana: Since there were not too many shows made on sports. So, I thought our show will reach out to a wider audience, a younger audience that likes sports.
