Anarkali: Reigning across time

Mughal-e-Azam is one of those classic movies which changed the face of Indian cinema. A heart-wrenching story, flawless performances, poetic dialogues and iconic sound tracks – it had every possible element to be an iconic film. But more than anything else, it was the 'woman' which made this love saga memorable.

Set in the backdrop of 16th century, Mughal-e-Azam follows the story of Prince Salim who falls in love with the exquisite commoner Anarkali. Twist in the plot is introduced when Salim's father disapproves of his romance and a mighty ego battle ensues. Anarkali survives verbal and physical abuse, and public shaming. However, she overcomes the crimes committed against her and tells her story to the world.

How does the musical give more prominence to women as compared to movie?

The musical is more about giving equality and power to the voices of the women through its narrative. The female characters stand up to male arrogance and ego. The play captures them displaying more sensitivity and understanding in critical situations at several times.

How is Anarkali a woman of today?

A woman who can defy the most powerful man on earth, and declare her love in open court is a woman for all times. 'Pyar Kiya toh Darna Kya' is an audacious declaration of an independent choice of a woman.

Is there a woman that inspires you?

There are many women who have shaped my life and inspired me. My wife remains at the top of that list.

How have you tweaked the original script of Mughal-e-Azam?

I have restructured the original script of the film as a stage-play, keeping in mind the needs and possibilities of a theatre production. The most important distinction is the fact that it is a live performance and the actors are singing and performing live on stage.

Is it to make it more relatable to today's youth?

This is a timeless tale of love and sacrifice that has connected to the young and old – across all generations. The story telling, aesthetics, pace, rhythm and intimate performances have connected deeply with today's youth and they have responded in large numbers and huge cheers.
