A contemporary display of traditional music
Titled ‘Ragascape’ the event was held on January 27 in Tollygunge Club
Bringing four different artists together at one platform, Sohinimoksha World Dance and Communication organised a musical event in collaboration with Tollygunge Club, Kolkata.
The event titled 'Ragascape' - a fusion of raag and jazz was held in the club premises on January 27.
The participating artists included Indrajit Roy Chowdhury (sitar), Richard X Bennet (Piano), Sanjib Pal (Tabla) and Adwaita Sundar Das (Tanpura).
Based out of New York, Indrajit Roy Chowdhury is one of the most talented young exponents of Rampur Senia Gharana in the venerated lineage of, Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury and Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury.
The artist has been primarily trained in Veena-Kar style of Sitar and strives for a perfect balance of traditionalism coupled with innovation through his performances.
Indrajit, who is globally renowned for his meditative alaap and brilliant taans, maintains a rigorous tour schedule across continents, performing in a range of distinguished venues, notably Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkata, Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts, Washington DC, and The Lincoln Center, New York, to name a few
Richard X Bennett, who also comes from New York, plays unique and soulful jazz with a sound all his own.
Apart from having six critically acclaimed raga-based records on Indian labels, the artist's albums have also been released by Ropeadope Records in October 2017.Later in 2018, the artist released a solo and an electronic collaboration. He has performed in over 20 countries till date.
A highly skilled exponent of the tabla and the pakhawaj, Sanjib has been groomed from the age of seven by Sunil Kammakan and Hridoy Biswas of the Farukhabad Gharana.
Subsequently honing his skills as a disciple of legendary tabla maestro Pandit Shankar Gosh, he has been a regular solo performer, and accompanist to Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury and other masters in India, Europe, and the USA.
Finally, Adwaita Sundar Das, a company secretary by training, an industrialist by profession and a classical music aficionado by vocation, is a Sarod disciple of Pandit Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury (student of Pandit Radhika Mohan Moitra and son of Sangeet Acharya Anil Roy Chowdhury).
